Reflection Questions:

  1. What has been my experience of sitting quietly before the Lord? Is it easy or is it something I shy away from?

  2. What are the ways I try to self-manage my anxieties?

  3. When I pause from the busyness of life, what are the deep concerns of my heart? How does God care for me in those things?

Spiritual Practice: Silence

The practice of silence can feel particularly difficult in our modern technological age filled with smart devices, non-stop news, sports, entertainment, podcast, music etc. In light of this, the practice of silence helps us to push against these things that vie for our attention so that we may give space to be with Jesus. In silence, there is an opportunity to listen to God, to receive from the stillness in the midst of the chaos of life and to grow in self-awareness in the loving care of God. Take some time to see how you might practice silence this week.

Some ways of practicing silence:

  • Turn off the radio / music / podcasts while driving.

  • Set a period of time during the day to sit in silence. Start with maybe just 5-10 minutes if this is something new.

  • Go on a walk or do some exercise in a quiet place without listening to anything.

Note: Sometimes being in silence brings up scattered thoughts or uncomfortable feelings. This is normal. Acknowledge them and let it also be an opportunity to bring them to God.
